Lead Magnet

Also called: Freebie, Opt-In, Gated Content

Definition

A lead magnet is a free resource you offer to potential clients in exchange for their contact information, usually an email address. Common formats include checklists, short guides, templates, quizzes, and video trainings. The goal is to start a relationship with someone who has a problem you can solve but isn’t ready to buy yet.

Why it matters for coaches

Most people who visit your website leave without taking any action. A lead magnet captures their attention and their email, so you can continue the conversation. It also serves as a filter. A lead magnet about “5 Signs Your Leadership Style Is Stalling Your Career” attracts a very different person than one about “How to Find Your Life Purpose.” The right lead magnet pre-qualifies your audience so that by the time they book a discovery call, they already trust your thinking.

Example

Generic: “I offer a free download on my website.”

Lead magnet-defined: “My lead magnet is a one-page ‘Coaching Readiness Scorecard’ that helps mid-career professionals assess whether they’re stuck in a growth plateau. It gets 22% opt-in rate from my blog traffic, and 15% of those people book a discovery call within 30 days.”
